Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do I always see weather for New York?
A: If you are coming from MSN Today, Passport sets your location to New York, NY if you have not set your ZIP code in Passport. Setting the ZIP code in your Passport profile will change the displayed city in MSN Today. To do this:
- Sign in to your Passport (or Windows Live ID) at http://www.passport.net
- Click "Registered Information"
- Fill in city/state/zipcode information in the "Home location" area
- Click the "Save" button to save your information
Q: I've moved. Why do I still see my old city?
A: If you are coming from MSN Today, this is probably because Passport still has your old location. To fix this problem, update your Passport profile to reflect your new city and zipcode. If you are not coming from MSN Today, you may need to delete your old city and add the new one.
Q: Why can't I find the city I'm looking for?
A: If MSN Weather doesn't find your location, try including the state orcountry as well as the city (for example, San Francisco, CA or London, England).Make sure that you separate the city and the state or country with a comma.
Q: How do I change my favorite cities?
A: Favorite cities (the cities displayed at the top of every page in weather tiles) are added as you visit different cities on MSN Weather, up to a total of four cities. If you have four cities already marked as favorites, then you must remove a city in order to add a new one. You can remove a city from your favoritesby clicking the
in the upper-right-hand corner of the tile (this appears when you move the mouse cursor over the tile). When you do this, that city will disappear and the next city you visit will automatically be added to the list (if you are on the Local Weather Forecast page, then that city will be added). You can also manage your list of favorites from the "Your Cities" page.
Q: How do I delete a city?
A: You can remove a city from your favorites by clicking on the
located the upper right hand corner of the tile (this appears when you move the mouse cursor over the tile). This should remove it from the list (the tile will disappear).
Q: I'm having problems deleting a city using Firefox. Why?
A: The deletion functionality doesn't work in earlier versions of Firefox, but it will work in more recent versions of Firefox (1.5 and later).
Q: Why do you only report data in Fahrenheit? I use Celsius!
A: You can switch between Fahrenheit to Celsius (and back) by clicking on the small "°F" and "°C" links sprinkled throughout the page. On most pages this resides in the upper right corner of the page.
Q: How do I see weather in a different language?
A: MSN Weather offers sites in several languages. You can view MSN's Spanish-language US weather site, MSN Clima, by clicking on the "Español" link at the top of the page. You can also try visiting other weather sites on MSN Worldwide:
- MSN Weather (U.K.)
- MSN Météo (France)
- MSN Wetter (Germany)
- MSN 天気 (Japan)

Toolbar Add-in Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do you only report weather for the US?
A: MSN Weather has weather for tens of thousands of locations all around the world and the United States, and we can also find weather for even more locations that are nearby. Due to the large number of locations, sometimes there are multiple possible matches for a name, in which case the results will be presented in a dropdown box.
In order to view the complete list of results, click the small arrow on the right-hand side of the dropdown box. If the results do not come back as expected, try adding the name of the country after a comma (e.g. London, England) when searching.
Q: Why can't I find the city I'm looking for?
A: If MSN Weather doesn't find your location, try including the state or country as well as the city (for example, San Francisco, CA or London, England). Make sure that you separate the city and the state or country with a comma.
Q: The toolbar add-in seems to be broken. What's wrong?
A: If you click on the toolbar add-in and it displays a "Data unavailable" message, this most likely means there is a problem with your Internet connection. The toolbar add-in works only when Internet Explorer is able to access the Internet. If you are able to access the Internet from Internet Explorer and it still displays the message, it means that MSN Weather is having temporary difficulties. It should resume working if you try again later.
Q: My city always/sometimes shows "N/A" in the toolbar. What's wrong?
A: A number of weather locations will show "N/A" in the toolbar, even when there is valid forecast information available for that city. This is because we do not get current condition information from some locations; however, you can still view weather forecasts for that city - you only need click on the toolbar button in order to display the full add-in with forecast information.
Q: Can I display temperature in the toolbar? Right now I can only see the icon (sun, cloud, etc.).
A: You can set the toolbar to display the current temperature alongside the icon. Go to the toolbar display options, and select "Show selective text labels."
For Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 and above, go to Windows Live Toolbar Options; click on the "Display" option and select "Use default settings" under the "Text labels for buttons" dropdown.
Q: I try to install the MSN Weather add-in but it keeps saying it's already installed; however, it doesn't display. What's wrong?
A: Certain earlier versions of the MSN Weather add-in require uninstalling from the Control Panel first. To do this, go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall "Weather Add-in for MSN Search Toolbar." After the uninstall process has completed, download and install the latest version of the MSN Weather add-in from the Windows Live Gallery.
Q: I've installed the MSN Weather add-in but it doesn't show up in the toolbar. What's wrong?
A: This could be due to several issues:
- All instances of Internet Explorer need to be closed after installing the add-in; opening a new instance of IE should then display the weather add-in.
- The weather add-in could be hidden in the settings. To check this, under the Windows Live Toolbar options, select the MSN Weather option (under "Manage Buttons") and check "Turn on Weather."
